"What is PV (photovoltaic) and what is a MyGen system?"
Unlike solar water heating systems, PV systems produce
electricity from sunlight. PV is short for photovoltaic or
photovoltaics. This word comes from the Greek word "photon" for
"light" and "volt" from the name of one of the first discoverers
of electricity, Alessandro Volta, an Italian physicist.
A PV system is
a solar electric system.
A MyGen system is a complete package of all the components you
need to create electricity from sunlight to provide some or all
of the electricity your home or office uses. It has been
engineered and tested by Kyocera Solar, Inc., one of the largest
photovoltaic module manufactures in the world.

"What does a MyGen
system do for me?"
A MyGen system gives you security of price once you have
purchased and installed your system. For the portion of the
electricity your MyGen system provides, you will not have any
price increases for the life of the system because the source of
your system's energy is the sun.
A MyGen system provides you with completely clean electricity
unlike the electricity that is produced from conventional energy
sources such as coal, gas, oil, and nuclear powered sources.
Each of those sources produces greenhouse gases or radioactive
waste, which no one has been able to dispose of.
Purchase of a MyGen system also represents a contribution to
your community in helping relieve the local utility of the
burden of adding more power plants. It shows you are helping
provide solutions to environmental pollution while offsetting
the need to build more power plants.

"How
do I know a MyGen system will work at my home?"
If you own your home and if your roof or some other area on your
property has a southern exposure that is unshaded from
approximately 9 or 9:30 a.m. until 4 or 4:30 p.m., then a MyGen
system will work for you.

"What if my home has a
tile roof?"
Not a problem. MyGen systems come with mounting hardware that
works on composition (asphalt) shingle, flat concrete tiles,
mission or Spanish tile roofs and even slate roofs. An
experienced PV installer knows how to work on each of these roof
types and will use roofing techniques that eliminate any chance
for leaks.

"Do I have to have batteries to store the electricity for
nighttime use?"
The least expensive way to store the electricity is to obtain
any nighttime usage of electricity from your local utility as
you do now. Your utility is then operating as your storage
system.

"How big a MyGen system do I need? Will it fit on my roof?"
The size of your system will depend on how much of your
electricity needs you want met by clean solar electricity. A
small MyGen system might meet only 10% of your electrical needs
to begin with. More PV modules and inverters can be added at a
later date.
A larger system could handle from half to all of your needs.
High quality Kyocera PV modules produce approximately 10 watts
of electricity per square foot. Therefore a system that would
produce from 250 to 450 kwh (kilowatt-hours) per month would
take up only some 240 square feet of roof space. That is an area
of 24 feet by 10 feet. The actual kwh produced each month on
your roof will depend on how much sunlight reaches your roof
each month. That varies according to geographic location and
weather conditions.

"How much does a
MyGen system cost?"
Cost depends on the size of the system you buy and a number of
other variables such as whether the city and state where you
live has any form of financial incentives or rebate programs.
Some states such as California have rebates that cover up to 50%
of the cost of the system for a MyGen system (or any qualifying
PV system) which is tied to the electrical grid.
A very small system that would only handle a fraction of your
electrical usage may cost only a few thousand dollars while a
mid-sized system could cost between $18,000 and $25,000 --
installation included -- and before any rebates are deducted.
A large system could cost $40,000 and more. Monthly payments: We
are all used to paying each month for the electricity we use. A
financed purchase of a MyGen system is the most convenient way
to buy a system.
For example, a $10,000 loan as part of a re-financed home
mortgage at 9% over 20 years comes to $90 per month.

"What about my electric utility? How do they fit into this?"
Because you will connect your system to the local electrical
utility, they are an important partner in the whole process.
More than 34 states now have laws requiring the electrical
utilities in those states to allow PV systems to be connected to
their grids. More states are coming around to this way of
thinking because it helps cut pollution and lowers the burden of
electricity production by their big power plants.
