Water and Wastewater Treatment

Industry: Water and Wastewater Treatment

Generic Application: Surge Suppression

Specific Application: PLC Power Protection

Application Overview: Many processes are controlled with Programmable Logic Controllers in water treatment facilities. This controllers demand high quality power in order to function properly. Voltage transients caused by lightning, transmitted by the electric utility from other sources, or from internal switching events, can cause either microprocessor upset or damage. Relying on clean power for any industrial application is risky especially when the public's health is at stake.

Common Problems: Residential grade surge suppressors are not well suited for industrial environments. For example, PLCs are generally hard-wired to the power source and do not use plug connectors. If a surge "strip" used in a control panel, it is hard to mount securely and it is often found at the bottom of the cabinet in a tangle of wires. While many such suppressors provide a lamp that shows the status of the suppressor, very few provide remote alarm capability.

OkSolar provides the following services and equipment:

Example:
The Phoenix Contact Solution: A better solution is the Phoenix Contact MAINS-PLUGTRAB. As a DIN rail mounted suppressor, it fits easily into the control cabinet and simply snaps on. The terminals accept standard wire sizes. Incoming power is wired to the "In" side of the module and protected power comes from the "Out" side. A red lamp indicates when the module should be replaced. The pluggable design makes replacement fast and easy.

The Phoenix Contact Bonus: When the red lamp lights, the protection circuit is removed from operation to prevent overheating. At this point, the PLC does not have protection, but it continues to function because the power is fed through continuously. There is a better way to know if your surge suppressor needs to be replaced than having the PLC and all its loops crash! With the MAINS-PLUGTRAB the user can either see the red lamp and/or use the remote contact relay. The dry contact can
