3M's™ Active School Zone Signs signal drivers to slow down near schools

Every year, millions of children walk to school. School-age children are especially vulnerable to pedestrian crashes because they are small which makes it more difficult for drivers to see them, and also because children can lack good judgment when crossing streets. In fact, students are at much greater risk traveling to and from school than at any other time in their school day. 3M now offers a new solution to improve school zone sign visibility, alert drivers to the presence of children, and protect children at school crossings.



The 3M™ Active School Zone Sign is a combination of high visibility fluorescent yellow green reflective color and a programmable unit which shows motorists the actual speed they are driving and/or the speed limit currently being enforced in the school zone. In the latter case, the sign displays reduced speed only when children are present. Both signs are mounted and used in conjunction with standard school crosswalk signs.

These variable - or dynamic - traffic signs have proven to command the attention and respect of drivers, especially at critical crossing locations where sight distance is obstructed, approach speed is relatively high, traffic volume is heavy or many children are on the scene.
